Statement Reaffirming Opposition to Torture
April 2008 the American Ethical Union issued a statement reaffirming its opposition to torture as conducted by the United States during the "War on Terror".

Death Penalty Moratorium Resoultion
The Society has passed a resolution requesting Missouri to impose a three-year moratorium on the death penalty so that this time may be devoted to study inequities in the legal system.  The resolution does not prejudge the ethical issue of capital punishment in itself.

The AEU (American Ethical Union, our national organization) has on a number of occasions passed resolutions against the death penalty in itself.  The most recent was in 2000.  Here is a link to that resolution.  At this page, you can also link to the main page of all AEU resolutions.  Various Ethical Societies around the country have also independently passed resolutions against the death penalty, and so has the NLC (National Leaders Council).

We have adopted the wording of our resolution for a temporary moratorium from the group Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty.  They support the moratorium because they believe it is a good first step toward abolishing capital punishment for good.  Their website is: MADP.

Members are invited to discuss the proposal, including the ramifications of establishing such things as an overall viewpoint typical of Ethical Society Mid Rivers, in the Esprit d'Escalier "General Chat" Forum.

Cost of War:

(Because the war in Iraq forces us into huge ethical issues, beyond the range of all normal concerns for living a worthwhile life, we interject herewith this notice.)   For the current, up-to-the-minute cost, exceeding 300 BILLION dollars, of the U.S. military operations in Iraq, go to Cost-of-War.

Who We Are

Ethical Society Mid Rivers is a fellowship of people of all ages committed to living an ethical life.   This commitment makes our fellowship religious in the highest sense of the word.   Our mission is to bring out the best in others and thereby in ourselves, through the experience of creating caring community, developing ethical identity, and strengthening our capacity to actualize ethical ideals.

For Children

SEEK (Sunday Ethical Education for Kids), from 11 A.M. to 12:15 P.M., is for children aged from Toddler through 12 years-old.  It is an oasis in families' busy lives.

You may drop in any Sunday for an independent, intact moral lesson.   The lessons are designed to make the children feel comfortable with each other, even if meeting for the first time.

SEEK draws on the wisdom of all human cultures and of scientific improvements in our understanding of human development.

For Adults

On Sundays at 11 a.m., we present an hour of music, thoughtful reflection, and affirmation of worth.   The hour provides true re-creation for members and visitors.   In addition, a variety of educational, social, and community-action events are held throughout the week.

Meaning in life, purpose in life, joy in life--these all come together in the ethical life.   We meet regularly to learn, grow, laugh, break bread together, and be inspired.   We invite you to join us.   Please visit and discover what we are about.

The public is invited to all programs.   For location and directions, click here.
