Pot Luck Dinner

It's Pot Luck Sunday!

After the lecture, please stay and join us for lunch.  First-time visitors are invited to attend and bring no food item for the table.  Others: bring a dish, any dish, from soup to salad to sandwich to entree to side dish to dessert.  Bring an item that doesn't require your attention from 11 to noon, since any sound in the kitchen is magnified into the room where our 11:00 a.m. program is in progress.  The oven is available to keep things warm, and a large 'fridge to keep things cool, and there are lots of outlets for crockpots, etc.; and the microwave is available right after the Lecture ends.  Even if you don't bring a dish or beverage, at least bring your appetite!  See you then!

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Why Individualism Hurts Individuals (and Society)"

Our guest speaker is Ben Chambers, a senior at Duchesne High School.  He has been active in politics since 2004, is president of the debate team, and has won numerous awards in debate and public speaking.  Next year he plans to attend Knox College and major in International Relations.

He writes, "War, poverty, environmental destruction —individualism is causing some of the most egregious violations of human rights ever seen.  Ideas of cooperation and shared responsibility are being abandoned.  If we wish to solve the problems faced by our society and the global community, we need to stand together".

The general public is invited.

the topic is:
"Reading, Questioning Adler"

We will read some of Adler's early spoken words("The New Ideal" excerpted from Deed and Creed), a little at a time, discuss and question as we go.  What were the leading ideas and emotional qualities of the first leader of the Ethical Movement that helped it to grow in a flash?

This is the last of the 4-week series we have dedicated to Adler-study.  After this, if there is sufficient interest, we will begin a new Original Sources group, meeting some other time than Wednesday evenings.  LED, of course, will continue on Wednesdays, with topics varying week to week.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.

     LA Times 23 Feb 2007
"Amazing Grace," a story of idealism, idealists and speaking truth to power, understands there is something inordinately moving and dramatic about a man who stands up for what is right and makes a difference in this life.

Quotes on the Film:
Stephen Farber, Movieline

Jeffrey Lyons, NBC's REEL TALK
"Amazing Grace is a sweeping historical epic which tells a story too long forgotten; the birth of freedom, and brings overdue glory to a true hero."

Paul Fischer, Dark Horizons
"Amazing Grace is an old fashioned epic in the tradition of David Lean, featuring astonishing performances in the first must-see film of the year."

Michael Medved- Nationally syndicated radio host
"A movie that dazzles the eye, touches the heart, and stirs the soul.  Elegantly crafted and superbly well-acted, AMAZING GRACE is a remarkably uplifting, substantive contribution to the popular culture -- and to our crucial understanding of freedom's history."

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   "Adler's Inaugural Address"
      Part Deux...

We will look at Adler's Inaugural Address, given in October 1876, in which he laid out incisive criticisms of dogma, ritual, and traditional religions, and argued for something new.  This Inaugural Address (our name for it, originally called "Ethical Problems") was the first address he gave following his successful proposal five months earlier in May, which we call his "Founding Address."

Our format: We read a paragraph, then stop and talk about it, and so on.  We've found that this greatly amplifies what we get out of his words.  We have managed to come away impressed with the power of his words, and glad to have become better acquainted with him, and feeling that we understand Ethical Culture better.

If time, we'll begin looking at selections from the book "Creed and Deed":, which is an edited compilation of the lectures he gave in his first year of lecturing to the new New York Ethical Society.

NOTE:  The entire book "Creed and Deed": is available online, although the formatting is awful.  I made photocopies of pages of my personal copy of the book, because much easier than editing what's online to make it readable.  But for those who are game to tackle (and maybe edit) the online version, here's a link to the book:

Sunday Lecture Series

"Facing My Racism – Personal, Social"

Racism’s a mistake.  It’s a sickness.  It’s in me.  It’s in my country.  I will talk about it.  Where does it come from? How do we make it go away?

I will talk about how I went from a naïve white boy to fathering two children by a black woman.  And if I can wrap my mind around it, I’ll talk about the ethics and the morality that make us yearn for a free play of affinity among us all, and yet how we end up closeting our "own" so closely that we strangle ourselves, while condemning those "others" so badly different from us.

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Happiness is Bombing Somalia"

The full title of this talk is Happiness is Bombing Somalia, or, "Targeting Happiness and Missing".  The lecture will present what generates happiness in human beings, and how people get mixed up, entangled, and screwed up in ways that lead to happiness-diminishing or happiness-destroying behaviors.

Signs that the U.S. has gotten screwed up this way will be pointed out.  A solution from an unexpected source will be suggested—the "humanist-mystical" insights of Alan Watts.  The solution comes at the individual level.  Only individuals who have experienced a genuine openness and acceptance of life can conceive of policies and structures at the national government level and the international level which can assist individuals in attaining this good, the good of simple natural happiness.

the topic is:
" What Did Adler Say?
Having Heard It, What Do We Think?"

We will look at the first two public addresses delivered by Dr. Felix Adler.  These persuaded people to form a new organization--to replace the failing religions of old with a new kind of human movement, to preserve what was best in those religions while improving them in the light of new knowledge and developing human experience.

Our movement grew and was full of enthusiasm during Adler's time.  We want to catch that spirit, if we can.

Sunday Lecture Series

"The Anti-Anti-Affirmative Action Fight"

"Affirmative action" – words that make some people want to fight.

According to St. Louis Jobs with Justice, Ward Connerly is "a rich California political operative" who is trying to amend Missouri’s Constitution and ban Affirmative Action.  Connerly is targeting five states during the 2008 presidential election.  He is leading an initiative petition.  His petitioners are on the streets of Missouri right now, asking voters to sign a petition to "stop inequality".

The Ethical Society takes the perspective that human beings make up a family, as a moral ideal, and that the truth is that it’s not a matter of every man for himself as if history didn’t happen or that relationships among groups of us aren’t skewed.  The Society has therefore invited Aaron Burnett, full-time organizer with St. Louis Jobs with Justice, to present the current political situation and what St. Louis Jobs with Justice is doing.

The general public is invited.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"Judgment"

Barack Obama emphasizes judgment.  I think it's a worthwhile and valuable emphasis.  How important is judgment in ethical choices?  How important is judgment in behavior, in action on the spur of the moment?

Reflecting on our own judgment can only help our judgment to grow.  So let's get real.  Think of a time--probably when you were younger or much younger, when you exercised poor judgment.  Did you learn from it?  Are you learning from it even now?

Obama regards his judgment (about what a powerful nation like the U.S. ought to do) as of high quality.  Maybe you wouldn't want to publicly give yourself an A, but does your judgment now feel to you much better than it used to be?  In what areas does this manifest?  Where would you like to have still better judgment?

Think back on your life, and let's get to know each other some more, in the rewarding way that we do.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"What message did you get from Ethical Culture that clinched the deal for you?"

Members who have been studying the book The Humanist Way on Sunday mornings have so far used the book as a stepping stone to talking about their own religious upbringing, and it's been awesome for them, they report.  (They're not even through Chapter One yet!)

For this Wednesday, I'm suggesting something similar, but with a particular focus.  Look into the feelings you had when you discovered Ethical Culture and recognized it was right for you, something to which you could commit, and then get behind the feelings to the thought.  Every feeling has a thought behind it, even if we don't consciously notice the thought (because feelings are so much more prominent).  Share your experience of discovering Ethical Culture's worth to you, and in telling your story, conjecture about what seems to have been the thought which you picked up from Ethical Culture, the thought that gave rise to your feelings.  Can we find a common thought among all our experiences?  If so, that would be a powerful thought to know.

(In two weeks, March 5, we'll begin our special 4-week series of discussing some original writings/speeches by Felix Adler.)

"True Lasting Inspiration"

Dr. Felix Adler, founder of the Ethical Movement and the Ethical Societies, delivered a speech at the culmination of his career titled "Undying Inspiration".  In it he got to the core of the Movement:  What is its source of inspiration and how does it bring unflappable inspiration to members?

It still speaks inspiringly to us.

Mr. Greenwell, Leader of Ethical Society Mid Rivers, will reprise this address, and add contemporary commentary.  All are invited to enjoy this unique opportunity to learn about the inspiration behind the Ethical Society and to savor inspiration as true years ago as it is today.

  "Sicko"

" America's most incendiary filmmaker, Michael Moore, returned in 2007 with this health-care-industry exposé.  SICKO tackles material as controversial as the topics explored in Moore's other films, yet does so in a way that places the focus on ordinary Americans affected by the nation's health-care crisis"

After providing some historical background on how our nation's medical care system became so ravaged and unfair, Moore interviews a series of individuals and families who have had their lives all but destroyed by the denial of care in the service of profit.  While there are two sides to the gun-control debate and even a legitimate discourse for how to best wage the war on terror, it's simply impossible to justify how a baby girl can wind up dead because her mother's health insurance wasn't accepted at a nearby hospital.  Moore smartly allows this and other stories to be told with little or no interference, conjuring strong feelings of empathy, rage, and deep sadness.

Of course, SICKO isn't a PBS documentary, it's a Michael Moore movie, and his fingerprints are all over it.  Moore visits countries that have universal health care--spectacularly so when he takes several World Trade Center workers to Guantanamo Bay (and then to Cuba) to receive health care that they were denied in the United States--and presents a compelling argument for adopting a similar system in the States.  Moore's ultimate purpose here is to compel Americans to care for one another, and it's a simple request that shockingly must be made via a major motion picture, making SICKO essential viewing.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Humiliation - How It Shapes Our Lives"

There’s no more searing inner pain than the pain of humiliation, and that’s why it endures, distorting personal behavior for a lifetime, unless a way is found to get free of its poison.  Psychologist Donald C. Klein initiated an entire field of study that examines humiliation.  Essays and research are gathered by the Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies Network, viewable at www.humiliationstudies.org.

This group is "dedicated to ending humiliating practices and breaking cycles of humiliation throughout the world.  We believe that, through this, space is opened for mutual respect and esteem to take root and grow.  We suggest that a mindset of cooperation and shared humility is necessary - not a mindset of humiliation - if we wish to build a better world, a world of equal dignity for all".

Mr. Greenwell will present the basic ideas of the originator, Donald Klein.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Practice Seeing Worth In Others!"

The book The Humanist Way, which is about our Ethical Movement, starts off with a chapter titled "The Greatest Idea in the World".  This is the attitude to have!  Our greatest idea, as I've been thinking lately, is that people can obtain deep reassurance (Adler called it "conviction") about the rightness of their relationship with reality without any of the dogmas that have set people against people.

The way to reach this soul-satisfying gladness of being, this conviction, is not by becoming convinced (convicted, conviction) of this or that doctrine about reality and self, but by exercising ethical action toward other beings.  The root of the capacity to act ethically toward others is to see them as having worth.

I (Leader, Bob Greenwell) will briefly present some of Adler's writings, then have you talk in small groups in the room, in a way designed to bring out multiple perspectives and insights.  My hope is you will leave feeling energized by the feeling that yes, we do have the greatest idea in the world.

What do you do to restore your personal sense of rightness with reality even when the world seems a madhouse?

How do you use the Ethical Society to accomplish this?  Perhaps it happens for you without your needing to think about it, and so if asked on the spur of the moment you couldn't say.  But if you do think about it, perhaps you will be able to put some words to it.

"Jesus as Ethical Hero"

Jesus is not so much the founder of Christianity as he is its idol.  The institution came more from Paul and other later organizers of the church.  Much attention is paid to stories about Jesus, such as the Christmas story, and to teachings about Jesus, while less attention is paid to teachings of Jesus.

An outsider’s take, and a very personal take, on Jesus the man and his teachings and his radical prescriptions for humanity, will be presented.  Ethics transcends particular religions, and Jesus was an ethical hero.

   "Gambling"

There was a roaring time at casinos last night (so I've heard).  What about it?  Is gambling a vice?  Or can it sometimes be entertainment?  Is its entertainment value only a surface attraction, while its real appeal is that it touches an addictive nerve?  Is it like sports, with winners and losers, but worthwhile regardless?  Or just competitive, vicious, worthless?

This is not a psychological research project!  We're not seeking answers in this time together as much as questions that open up our perspectives.  We simply want to share our experiences with one another, in an ethical frame.
